What your lawn is doing through the year

Spring (Sep–Nov)

The busiest time of year. Cool-season grasses wake up in September and grow fastest in October and November, especially after rain. Mow every 10 to 14 days and avoid cutting more than a third of the height at once.

Summer (Dec–Feb)

Growth stays strong into December, then slows on dry, exposed blocks in January heat. Raise the mowing height so the lawn shades its own roots and holds moisture.

Autumn (Mar–May)

Autumn rain brings a second, smaller growth flush. From April, leaf drop from garden trees becomes the main job. Clear leaves before they smother the lawn.

Winter (Jun–Aug)

Frost and short days mean very little growth. Mowing every five to six weeks is usually enough. It's a good time for clean-ups and cutting back overgrown areas before spring.

Why altitude matters

Our round climbs about 300 metres, from Linden at around 560 metres to Wentworth Falls at around 870. Every step up is a little colder, so spring arrives later and winter lasts longer. A Linden lawn may need its first proper cut a couple of weeks before one in Wentworth Falls, and keep growing a little later into autumn.
